Google releases its online dictionary service

Google Yahoo Msn UpdateBEIJING, (Xinhuanet) - Google has launched Google Dictionary, which provides users with definitions and synonyms. In addition to providing definitions from its own proprietary database of words, it also provides definitions provided by an extensive variety of scholarly sources. One can bookmark words and come back later, view a list of recent searches, and even translate words into different languages.

The company that will feel the greatest pain from this recent initiative is anticipated to be Answers.com. Earlier, Google would link back to Answers.com as soon as a user clicked on the "definition" button, but now all those links go directly to Google Dictionary. This might be a challenge to Answers.com resilience; which may possibly lose substantial traffic and a corresponding loss of advertising revenue.

Lots of current online and offline dictionary providers can also suffer as Google Dictionary attracts web traffic.
