UPDATES: Google Street View launches in London

Google Yahoo Msn UpdateLondoners and others all over the world can now see themselves, their homes, cars and places of work on Google Street View.

The popular but controversial service launched in London yesterday.

It allows people to search for addresses and spot high-quality photos of houses as well as streets in selected locations around the world.

It is believed that a Google van with a camera was in London during the summer taking snapshots of the city. The service, previously available in other Canadian cities and around the world, was launched yesterday in London.

Google Street View is controversial because photographs of people along with their homes are taken without their knowledge and then uploaded onto the popular search engine.

A few, including the Canadian privacy commissioner, have called for the faces and license plates of individuals to be blurred so they cannot be identified.

Street View, one of several such services has launched in the United States in 2007. It sparked the biggest controversy in Britain, where surveillance cameras are everywhere but where a debate about a person’s right to privacy is raging.

To take a look at locations around the city, users can Google “map london ontario,” click on the Google link and drag the yellow person icon onto the location they want to look at.
